Its all about them and their gun fetish.

Ok. So I don't write often. I dare say, there aren't as many things I want to comment on as I first thought. I'll most likely put this into DailyKos to get some actual readership.

This enrages me. Why? Because apparently, its all about getting a few miguided Americans with a gun fetish.
I'm part of the ROTW (Rest of the World) which, too often, the American citizen appears to be either: Completely unaware of, Pretty scared of, misguided in assuming we're here for their benefit, in strong belief we think nothing except aspiring to be Americans... or a mixture of all that, depending on how red-state you go.

However, back to the point. The UN is attempting to move the considerable mountain of illegal guns and the illegal gun trade. From a progressive point of view, an extremely noble task. There are simply too many cases of uprisings, sustained militia warfare and simple everyday murder. I'd have thought it was a no-brainer. The less illegal guns around, should equate to less deaths.

However, that ideal hasn't accounted for the NRA. The National Rifle Association, has taken umbrage at the idea sending 100,000 letters to the man responsible claiming the UN is doing nothing other than attemping to take away their member's guns.

Yes. Its aaaaalllll about the American gun owner.

One could stoop down to the levels of many right wingers who are capable of the most amazing binary thought coupled with gigantic leaps of logic and say that by opposing the UN program, the NRA are PRO-murder and PRO-illegal weaponry. But I won't.

Part of the key misunderstanding must be related to that weird word 'illicit'. Unless the NRA generally supports the ownership of illegal guns, and laws managing them, it really doesn't affect a single member of the NRA.

In my rage about the topic, questions filter up. Why does the NRA equate this program with taking their guns? Why do they believe that having gun laws in other countries will affect their ability to buy weapons?

Some of the miscommunication the NRA is propagating includes 'illicit' but tends to ignore its actual meaning. Examples here & here (Previous UN review). The NRA sponsored web site about the topic has this to say on its front page:

...These dictatorships, terrorist states and so-called “free” nations of the world plan to meet on our home soil to finalize a U.N. treaty that would strip all citizens of all nations of their right to self-protection, and strip you of your rights under the Second Amendment.
How many people around the world should die as a result of a massive propaganda drive by the NRA deliberately misinforming its members before we say enough?

Hello good sir I am Sig. For information on what armed citizens views are here in America may I suggest http://forums.1911forum.com/ as a good site. It is a popular forum for many responsible gun owners. To post you must join the sight which is free but you may read and not join as well. If you ask constructive questions you will get the like! Armed citizens in America are not a bunch of cowboys as I suspect the world sees us but many of us are aware the global elites would love for America to be free of firearms so this may be the NRA perspective as well.
I hope you do view the forum as these are everyday citizens of the US discussing firearms and not a media outlet which we all know it not always truthful.
With that I bid you a very good and safe day and happy blogging:)

I don't think you want to get me started on the NRA. Guns are made for one purpose and that is to kill other living things. Do we need so many and should we be doing so much of that? I don't think so.

Hey bud, you got seriously sandbagged by internet hawkers.

On the gun issue I can tell you this: as a Canadian, there's nothing more irritating than reading how the socially neglected try to better their situations by waving guns around in their neighbourhoods here in Toronto, guns they've brought over the border from America.

For all intents and purposes, the whole gun thing in America is entire lunacy; the Cold War tripe they quote as legitimacy reveals a darker problem of America. They categorically DO NOT TRUST any government.

Why should this be so? I've concluded that it all stems from the dreadful result of The Philadelphia Convention of 1787, when America was formed.

At this time, reasonable people tried to reason with people who were convinced that slavery wasn't just OK, they were entirely entitled to it. The resultant Constitution, the Declaration, and the plan for the government structure were so badly hobbled, that even one of its chief architects, Thomas Jefferson lamented

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."

The plan of the government, an elected executive (the President), elected Congress (for two year terms), and the elected Senate ensures that the American government will be forever stalemated (at huge expense), and subsequently all matters are deferred to the judiciary, who again, are partisan appointments.

Their government couldn't possibly author even reasonable laws without huge social forces bearing down on them.

Now back to the guns.

Since the government is routinely viewed as an equivalent to the vainest, most indifferent feudal lord imaginable, the average person still thinks that they'll need guns to deal with this Big Daddy. Hence the popularity of the NRA.

Mercifully, we (Canada) and probably Australia don't have governments in such a sorry state, so we're far more inclined to 'get in line' in order to see our communities work.

Americans would kill for this.
